Flames Beat Sliding Blackhawks 3-1

13 hours 10 min ago

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Jarome Iginla had a goal and an assist to help Calgary Flames beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 Friday night.

Olli Jokinen scored in the first period and Jay Bouwmeester added a power-play goal in the second to help Calgary shake off two straight home losses.

Brent Seabrook scored for Chicago, which has lost five straight, including an 8-4 loss in Edmonton the night before. The Blackhawks also lost 3-2 at Vancouver in overtime on Tuesday night.

Ray Emery stopped 29 of 32 shots for the Blackhawks, who have six games left in a nine-game road trip that will feature games in all four time zones.

Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 26 shots for his 299th NHL win. He passed Mike Vernon for the Flames’ goalie record with 527 games.

Chicago has lost seven straight road games.

With Calgary hanging on to a 2-1 lead, Iginla gave the Flames some breathing room at 12:39 of the third period. Sent in alone by Alex Tanguay, Iginla fooled Emery with a deke, then dragged the puck past the goalie for his 19th goal.

Kiprusoff’s best stop came early in the third as he sprawled to deny Viktor Stalberg from close-in as he burst in from off the wing in a bid for the tying goal.

Calgary took advantage of a four-minute double minor for high-sticking on Michael Frolik to make it 2-1 at 18:56 of the second.

Mikael Backlund’s shot through a Blair Jones screen was kicked out by Emery but went right to Bouwmeester, who fired in the rebound for his fourth goal.

Chicago had the edge in play in the first period, outshooting Calgary 13-6, but the Flames turned the tables in the second holding a 16-6 edge in shots.

Emery, who had 29 stops, was excellent in net for the Blackhawks. His record falls to 11-4-2.

Chicago tied the score at one with 29 seconds remaining in the first period, taking advantage of a defensive lapse. Seabrook crept in from the point and buried a perfect cross-ice pass from Patrick Kane before Kiprusoff could get across.

Calgary opened the scoring at 12:24 on a Jokinen’s goal, though it took a couple minutes for his 13th goal to be confirmed.

Jokinen let go a wicked rising slapshot from 30 feet out that went off the bar at the back of the net and bounced out so fast that Jokinen, who immediately put his arms in the air, appeared to be the only person on the ice that thought it was a goal. Play continued briefly with the crowd of 19,289 seemingly confused also before play was stopped and video replay confirmed that it was a goal.

Calgary, which had lost three straight games at home, kicks off a three-game road trip against the Pacific Division Monday night in Anaheim.

Chicago will fly home for a brief stay before heading to Colorado, where they’ll continue their road trip on Tuesday night..

Krys Kolanos made his Flames debut after signing with Calgary on Wednesday. Kolanos had been playing with the Flames AHL affiliate in Abbotsford, where he was the team’s leading scorer.

NOTES: Iginla’s goal was No. 403 in his career, tying him with Peter Bondra for 39th all-time… Kolanos played right wing on a line with Mike Cammalleri and Jones… It was the 137th career NHL game for Kolanos, who has seen NHL time previously with Phoenix, Edmonton and Minnesota… Flames RW Lee Stempniak (sprained ankle) did not play. He’ll be out of the line-up for six weeks… Chicago RW Andrew Brunette (upper body) missed his first game of the season.

Wolves Skate Past IceHogs, 4-2

Sat, 02/04/2012 - 04:52

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Chicago Wolves surrendered the game’s first goal, but rattled off four straight markers en route to a 4-2 Illinois Lottery Cup victory over the Rockford IceHogs Friday night at the Allstate Arena.

Forwards Tim Miller (2G) and Michael Davies (G, A) and defenseman Mark Matheson (2A) each tallied multiple points for Chicago, which snapped its three-game home skid and pushed its overall winning streak to four games.

“We got off to a pretty lethargic start tonight,” said Wolves head coach Craig MacTavish. “Rockford has been playing well and I like how we battled back and were able to come out on top.”

After trailing 1-0 just 1:26 after the opening faceoff, Chicago (25-16-1-3) knotted the score with 37 seconds remaining in the first period. Miller wrapped the puck around the net and dropped a backhand pass toward the crease that deflected off a Rockford defender’s stick and through IceHogs goaltender Carter Hutton’s legs.

The Wolves grabbed the lead 2-1 at 13:54 of the middle frame. Right wing Mark Mancari’s shot from the top of the near circle was stopped by Hutton, but he coughed up a rebound to forward Anton Rodin in the slot. The rookie flipped a backhand shot into the empty net for his fifth goal of the year.

Chicago took a 3-1 advantage just 1:08 later when defenseman Nolan Baumgartner slid a pass from the top of the near circle to Davies standing alone at the side of the net. He snapped a shot just under the bar past an outstretched Hutton.

Miller’s second tally of the night came at 13:16 of the third period. Matheson’s shot from the point was redirected by Miller over Hutton’s glove.

Hutton (10-6-2) posted 14 saves.

Rockford (20-22-1-4) cracked the scoreboard at 1:26 of the first period. Center Peter LeBlanc carried the puck into the Wolves zone and flicked a wrister that went over the stick and past screened Chicago netminder Eddie Lack.      IceHogs defenseman Ben Youds bagged a power-play marker with 50 seconds remaining in the game, but Lack shut the door the rest of the way to preserve the win.

Lack (11-11-3) thwarted 30 shots.

The Wolves host the Peoria Rivermen in an Illinois Lottery cup game at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Allstate Arena.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jeremy Montgomery scored 16 points and Cleveland State shot 68 percent Friday night in a 65-47 victory over Loyola of Chicago.

“We focus on not that many pianos but high-quality pianos,” Zoells says of PianoForte.

Lisa Siwek agrees it’s no ordinary piano shop. She admits she was lured to the store to play the Fazioli but then fell in love with the store’s mission.

“PianoForte is a foundation that helps launch the careers of a lot of young and upcoming artists with phenomenal talent,” she says.

Like young pianist Soheil Nasseri, who played in a recent PianoForte concert.    The free or lower-cost performances are held at all hours of the workweek.

Just last weekend, PianoForte sponsored a Schubert festival, with six hours of free musical performances on stage.

“I pretty  much immediately started putting on concerts because what I really wanted was for people to love the piano,” Zoells says.

PianoForte is located on South Michigan Avenue in the old Fine Arts Building. In addition to hosting concerts, the store also gives away pianos to organizations in need. Click here to learn more.

How To Help Your Skin Fend Off The Harshness Of Winter

Sat, 02/04/2012 - 03:53

CHICAGO (CBS) — Chilly temps and dry heat can do a number on your skin. As CBS 2′s Mary Kay Kleist reports, there are simple ways to make sure winter doesn’t make you look old.

In winter, low humidity outdoors combined with dry indoor heat robs skin of moisture.

“The important things to think about doing with your daily routine during the winter time is to repair, replenish, and protect. The skin barrier, when it stays intact, helps prevent dehydration and dryness of the skin,” says Jill Weinstein, a dermatologist with the Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group.

Dr. Weinstein suggests using creamier makeup and moisturizers.  Go for products with sunscreen.  UV-A rays are still strong in the winter. Instead of licking your lips, swipe them with an oil-based lip balm.  Eat foods loaded with vitamins and antioxidants to help your skin.

Trade the long, hot bath  for a short, warm shower. Rehydrate overnight by keeping a humidifier in the bedroom.

Here is the list of skin-boosting foods:

*Salmon – a great source of niacin, which is a B vitamin that can keep skin cells healthy.  Selenium in salmon is an antioxidant that will help protect your skin from sun damage.

*Avocados — this fruit is loaded with essential oils and B-complex vitamins that nourish your skin, inside and out.

*Mangoes — loaded with vitamin A.  This helps to repair skin cells.  If you don’t get enough vitamin A, the result will be a dry, flaky complexion.

*Almonds — they carry vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that can help in fighting skin-aging free radicals.

*Cottage cheese — the selenium and vitamin E in the cottage cheese gives us a powerful free radical-fighting antioxidant duo.

*Soybeans — these are protein-rich to help the skin stay firm.

*Mushrooms — rich in riboflavin, which is a B vitamin that helps with tissue maintenance and repair.

*Sweet potatoes – these are rich in beta-carotene.  Your body will convert this to vitamin A, which helps to shed dead skin cells.

*Papaya — this fruit is high in vitamin C.  Vitamin C is one of the best antioxidants for protecting skin from damage that leads to wrinkles.

*Flaxseed oil — omega 3′s are good for your skin.  Flaxseed oil is one of the best sources.

One last tip: Cutting back on refined sugar can do wonders for your skin.  Refined sugars cause an inflammatory reaction in the body that can add years to your face.

High-Rise Eyesores Have Residents Seeing Red

Sat, 02/04/2012 - 03:39

CHICAGO (CBS) — The staggering economy has created scores of abandoned commercial housing developments  across Chicago.  Should they be torn down when years go by and they become eyesores?

CBS 2’s Mike Parker looked at a few that suggest the wrecking ball will have to wait.

Construction began slowly on a condo project six years ago at 2609 West Belmont Ave. Two years ago, work stopped after the project was foreclosed upon and there was no new buyer.

Since then, it has become blight. From the Belmont bridge over the North Branch of the Chicago River, it looms over the neighborhood, looking almost like some abandoned building in Baghdad.

It was to be a 46-unit condo building.  But for years now, it’s been covered with no trespassing signs and gang graffiti.

State Rep. Deb Mell is familiar with it. She lives in one of the expensive townhomes across the street.

“Not only is this ugly,” Mell says, “it’s bad for morale for anyone who lives here. But it’s unsafe and it shows gangbangers and criminals that we don’t care about our neighborhood.”

She says the dark and empty structure is making it tough for some of her neighbors to sell their homes.

The lawmaker  thinks when a project like this one goes bad for so long, it should be demolished.

“That would be my preference, to just bring this whole thing down,” she says.

But sometimes white elephants can roar again. The city told CBS 2 that a new developer has taken over the project and will soon begin preparing the site for a resumption of construction.

And consider the Shangri La Hotel and Condo development announced in 2004 for 111 West Wacker Drive.  What was to be a 90-story jewel on the river ground to a halt early in construction. Now it is an ugly, half-completed concrete parking garage.

But again, a new developer is reportedly on board with plans for a much simpler, less grandiose, 60-story condo-only building.

Someone You Should Know: Barber Instructor To Inmates

Sat, 02/04/2012 - 03:25

CHICAGO (CBS) — He has four businesses to be concerned about, but he still finds time to do something to change the lives of inmates at the Cook County jail.

Inside the jail is a barber college established in conjunction with correctional authorities and Larry Roberts.

Roberts is also a franchiser of two barber salons and owner of two barber colleges. Although he doesn’t profit from the jail house barber college, he’s happy that those who become his students do.

“Now we’ve got something that we could take out there and make something better with it,” inmate Andy Rodriguez says.

One of the pluses of this school is that it not only gives an opportunity to an inmate to learn a skill but it also makes available a free haircut to every inmate here.

It isn’t all hands-on barbering they learn. Classroom sessions are conducted by Roberts’ first student, Bobby Matteson. They study physiology, anatomy and bacteriology, along with how to compose a resume and write a business plan.

“We make six digits cutting hair, so I’m trying to teach these guys how to do the same thing,” Roberts says. “They don’t have to do things where they have to come back to this institution ever again.”

Larry Roberts is someone you should know.

5 Injured, Including Child, In North Side Fire

Sat, 02/04/2012 - 03:11

CHICAGO (STMW)– Five people,  including a 3-year-old girl and police officer, were hospitalized following a smoky fire that started Friday night at a North Side apartment.

The fire started about 8:40 p.m. from cooking in the kitchen of a second floor apartment at 2303 N. Clybourn Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs.

A 3-year-old girl was initially taken in critical condition to Children’s Memorial Hospital, the fire department said. By 10:15 p.m., the girl was reportedly responding well and was alert and talking.

Four adults, including a Chicago police officer, were taken to area hospitals in fair to serious condition, according to the fire department. The officer suffered smoke inhalation injuries.

Firefighters contained the blaze to the kitchen where it started, fire officials said. No smoke was found on any other floors and paramedics “checked and calmed” residents outside.

As many as four police officers were inside the building helping residents, according to dispatch reports. Police could not immediately provide further details.

Security helped a handicapped man get down the stairs, according to the reports.

The fire, which was elevated to a still-and-box alarm with an EMS Plan 1 response for five ambulances, was controlled by 9:15 p.m.

26 Years Later, City Sticker Renewal Arrives In Mail

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 23:13

CHICAGO (CBS) – It’s called snail mail for a reason.

A check for a city vehicle sticker arrived in the mail this week at Clerk Susana Mendoza’s office.

It was mailed 26 years ago!

The Chicago Bears were Super Bowl champions in 1986. That was when a senior citizen named Gustav Morner mailed a check to renew the sticker for his car.

City Clerk Susana Mendoza posted this check on Facebook. It arrived this week but was mailed 26 years ago.

Stamps were 22 cents and the check, dated May 10, 1986, was for $25. (It costs $30 for seniors today.)

“They brought it on up and said, ‘Take a look at this,’” Mendoza said. “I opened it up and thought, ‘Oh my Lord.’ How is it possible. Can you believe this. Are you kidding me? Twenty six years? It’s absurd.”

Mendoza posted the postmarked letter and check on Facebook and reminded people that applying for city stickers online is much, much faster.

Mendoza says her office looked for Morner, but could not find him. She fears after all these years that he may have died.

Man Accused Of Brutal Bucktown Rape Bonds Out

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 22:59

CHICAGO (STMW) — A Pilsen man accused of raping a 26-year-old woman, then dragging her back into her Bucktown apartment as she tried to escape before strangling her into unconsciousness is free on bond.

Michael Giffin, 25, of the 1700 block of South Carpenter, is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint for the alleged Saturday rape. He was ordered held on $750,000 bond on Sunday.

But the Cook County Sheriff’s office on Friday confirmed Giffin is no longer in custody at the Cook County Jail after the required $75,000 bond was posted on Wednesday.

He’ll appear for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 17, Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.

Police say they responded to a call for help at 4:15 a.m. in the 2300 block of West St. Paul on Saturday. A woman told authorities she had been sexually assaulted. When the woman fled an apartment after the assault, Griffin allegedly pursued her and dragged her back inside, police said.

The woman was taken to Saint Mary Medical Center in “stable” condition, police said.

Giffin works as a youth soccer coach, is studying industrial design at UIC and is an assistant on the UIC soccer team, his attorney said.

Prosecutors say he met the victim at one bar and went to another bar with her, and then shared a cab back to her home.

She invited him in and they had a beer, but when she said she was tired and wanted to go to sleep, he forced her to have sex with him multiple times, prosecutors said. At one point he allegedly threatened to kill her.

Afterwards, Giffin went to the bathroom and the victim ran out into the hallway and screamed for help but Giffin grabbed her by the ankles and dragged her back into the apartment, prosecutors say.

He then allegedly strangled her until she was unconscious.

The victim later identified Giffin as her attacker, prosecutors say.

Wearing a striped sweater and dress pants, he spoke during a brief hearing Sunday only to indicate that he understood he couldn’t contact the victim if he made bail.

Video: ‘Littlest Giant Fan’ Knows His Stuff!

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 22:52

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – As Big Blue fever sweeps the Tri-State area, we noticed a video on YouTube of one little guy who just might be the littlest Giants fan.

We don’t have a lot of details as to who this young man is yet, but uploader “bethchich” says it’s her two-year-old son.

The video was recorded before the Giants/49ers game on Jan. 22. He’s wearing a Giants cap and Manning jersey.

Photos: Show your love for Big Blue!

As the boy is shown Giants football cards, he’s able to name the players. Ahmad Bradshaw, Hakeem Nicks, Jason Pierre-Paul – even Jumbo Elliott – he nails each one. Only Leonard Marshall seems to escape his grasp.

Even his sippy cup has a blue top.

He manages to get in a diss on Rex Ryan, saying he doesn’t like him or the Jets. Instead, he’s all about Tom Coughlin.

Check it out below.

What do you make of his Giants knowledge? Impressed? Sound off in our comments section below.

Urban Meyer: ‘We Will Continue To Recruit With Relentless Effort’

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 22:50

(CBS) In Chicago for Big Ten coaches meetings, Ohio State Urban Meyer issued a statement responding to questionable recruiting tactics alleged by Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema and Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio.

“We had an opportunity to discuss a number of issues with each other and conference staff, including those that have arisen this week,” the statement said. “It should be noted that my coaching staff is in full compliance with our recruiting efforts, and no one on this staff did anything illegal or unethical. We will continue to comply with NCAA rules and recruit with relentless effort, especially the great state of Ohio.”

Earlier in the week, both Bielema and Dantonio expressed frustration about how Meyer was recruiting since taking the Ohio State job in late November. Both Wisconsin and Michigan State lost a verbal commitment to the Buckeyes on Wednesday’s signing day.

“Before, I was very stressed, depressed, angry,” Nathaniel says.

But he was also eager to work. When he finally got a chance to visit the recruiters, he had caught the eye of Mary Luckey, who is in charge of the hiring process at Cook Illinois Corporation.

“I really liked his smile,” Luckey says.

His smile may have attracted the recruiter, but he was just one of 100 job seekers who applied for a position that day. Nathaniel was among 10 who passed a criminal background check, a written test and scored high marks during the interview.

“He looked in my eyes and never looked away. To me, eye contact is first and foremost,” Luckey says.

Nathaniel’s advice to those attending job fairs is to go to different vendors, even if it’s not in your work field.

“Sometimes, you have to think outside the box just to get a foot in the door,” he says.

To Nathaniel, getting the job meant being able to afford a place of his own and help his youngest daughter with college expenses.

“It felt good to be able to know I was going to be able to afford the things that I need to take care of as a human being and not have to worry about where I was going to lay my head the next day,” he says.

Goodell Not Ruling Out Chicago Super Bowl

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 22:24

(WSCR) A Super Bowl in Chicago?

It might not be as crazy of an idea as you think. During Roger Goodell’s press conference in Indianapolis on Friday, The Score’s Les Grobstein asked the commissioner about the possibility of the Super Bowl coming to Soldier Field.

“Chicago is a great community,” Goodell said. “As far as football fans are concerned, there’s no greater passion than in Chicago. There are a number of issues that go into playing a Super Bowl. It’s not just the size of the stadium. It’s clearly the number of hotel rooms, the other infrastructure, all of which I presume Chicago would meet. If (the Bears) are interested, we certainly will meet with them and discuss the ability to do that.”

Durkin: Super Bowl XLVI Prediction

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 22:05

By Dan Durkin-

(CBS) And then there were two.

The 2011 NFL season has come down to an epic clash of eastern seaboard supremacy, Boston vs. New York.  Baked beans vs. bagels.  Brady vs. Manning.  Red Sox vs. Yankees.  Wait, wrong sport.

There’s certainly no shortage of storylines leading up to Super Bowl XLVI, which is exactly what the NFL hoped for.  Cast all that aside, as what I’m most excited about is the quality of football we will see on Sunday when the Patriots battle the Giants for the right to hoist the Lombardi hardware.

Much will be made of the fact that these two teams squared off in the 2007 Super Bowl, but the rosters look much different this time.  In fact, a mere 23 players remain from the 2007 rosters.  Gone are names like Moss, Burress, Harrison, and Strahan.  In are names like Welker, Nicks, Chung, and Pierre-Paul.  The fact that both of these teams have undergone such radical overhauls in four years’ time and are once again playing in the Super Bowl is a testament to shrewd scouting, and even more astute coaching.  Why don’t people spend more time talking about the Bill Parcells’ coaching tree?

The Giants are peaking at the right time.  A few weeks back, I drew a parallel between the 2011 Giants and the 2010 Packers.  Teams that endured some injuries early in the season that affected their running game, went through a bit of an identity crisis and became a pass-first team, found themselves in a do-or-die situation at end the season, met the challenge, then hit the gas pedal in the playoffs.

Eli Manning has elevated his game to a new level in 2011.  The Giants want the ball in Manning’s hand in crucial moments – third downs and in the fourth quarter – and he’s rewarded them handsomely, setting an NFL record with 15 fourth-quarter touchdown passes.  Granted, he’s been surrounded with talented playmakers, but that becomes a chicken and egg argument.  As certainly, nobody predicted players like wide receiver Victor Cruz or tight end Jake Ballard to emerge the way they have this year.  Whether it’s Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Cruz, or Ballard, Manning has shown more awareness and confidence in the pocket, keeping his eyes downfield amidst the rush, anticipating routes, and accurately delivering his passes.

Lost in the Giants prolific passing attack is their running back tandem of Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs.  At the outset of the season, most experts painted the Giants as a ground-and-pound style team, feeding the hot hand in the backfield to set up play-action shots down the field.  Over the course of the season, they flipped the script, which again speaks to the willingness of Tom Coughlin and offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride to adapt their philosophy during the season to maximize effectiveness.

Defensively, the Giants can pressure the quarterback with just their front four better than any team in football.  Credit general manager Jerry Reese for accumulating a group of mammoth and versatile athletes on the defensive line, then credit defensive coordinator Perry Fewell for designing schemes to take advantage of their versatility.  Fewell often uses hybrid line combinations with four defensive ends, then twists and stunts them to successfully confuse opposing blocking schemes.

Look for the Patriots to line up in a lot of two tight end sets this weekend to counter and stymie the Giants front four.  70% of the Patriots offensive snaps came out of two tight end sets this season – granted, some of these had tight ends split out wide – and the Giants were the second worst team in the NFL at generating sacks against two tight end formations.

Keeping tight ends in to block is a double-edged sword.  While it may provide extra protection for your quarterback, it also gives you less eligible receivers out in routes.  This is one of the many schematic chess matches to follow this weekend.  As effective as the Giants are at pressuring the quarterback – they sacked Patriots quarterback Tom Brady five times in their 24-20 win in Foxboro earlier this season – the Giants still have lapses in their defensive secondary which the Patriots will surely exploit from time to time.

Brady’s performance last weekend against the Ravens was as poor as I’ve ever seen him play, so it’s hard to imagine him having back-to-back clunkers.  I’ve previously referred to Brady as a football robot, as he shows flawless mechanics and typically doesn’t make crucial mistakes.  However, two weeks ago, he nearly cost his team the right to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.

While we’re on the topic, I’m still not sure how the Lee Evans’ catch in the end zone wasn’t a (game winning) touchdown.  By the letter of the law: “If a player controls the ball while in the end zone, both feet, or any part of his body other than his hands, must be completely on the ground before losing control, or the pass is incomplete.” To me, once Evans’ second foot hit the ground with possession of the ball, the zebra’s arms should have gone to the sky in a pointing motion to signal touchdown.  Alas, that’s a topic for another time, as the NFL officiating has been spotty at best throughout the playoffs.  I digress.

While the Patriots are a pass to set up the run team, they will need more balance this weekend if they expect to win.  Simply dropping back and throwing the ball all over the field won’t get it done against the Giants.

It’s incredible to think about how much the twist of a left ankle has left me torn about how this game will work out.  But Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has been simply dominant all season long, and it’s impossible to discount the impact his health will have on the outcome of the game.

Whether split out wide for a jump ball opportunity, or sent over the middle of the field – where he’s most effective – Gronkowski is a physical mismatch for any defender on the field, who has bullied his way to 21 touchdowns this season.  His presence commands bracketed coverage – linebacker underneath with a safety helping over the top – which creates single coverage opportunities for his teammates.  If Gronkowski is unable to play on Sunday, the Giants will be able to pick and choose who and when they double team based on pre-snap alignments.

Make no mistake about it, Gronkowski isn’t the only weapon on the Patriots offense, as wide receiver Wes Welker, and fellow tight end Aaron Hernandez can also create restless thoughts for opposing defensive coordinators.  Recall if you will Welker’s start to the season, when he compiled 785 receiving yards and six touchdowns through the first six games of the season.  Hernandez also carried the load at times, and his versatility has earned the trust of coaches to give him carries at running back.  The concussion he suffered in the divisional round against the Broncos most likely has the coaches re-thinking that strategy.

The much maligned Patriots defense has come together over the past three weeks, particularly along the defensive line.  Anchored by defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, the defensive line has been stout at the point of attack, allowing linebackers Brandon Spikes and Jerrod Mayo to flow to the ball and blow up running lanes.  My doubts about the Patriots defense have always been due to their secondary.  You can certainly expect to see the Giants line up with four wide receivers early in the game to see if Julian Edelman lines up in coverage, and if he does, that’s a match-up problem the Giants will capitalize on.

As difficult as it is to pick against a team quarterbacked by Tom Brady and coached by Bill Belichick, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.  In my estimation, the Giants are simply the more complete team.

Start spreading the news, New York‘s winning Sunday.

My pick: Giants 24, Patriots 23

Season Record: 176-90

Pair Formally Charged In Murder Of Chicago Police Officer

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 21:41

CHICAGO (CBS) — Two men accused of killing Chicago Police Officer Clifton Lewis during a holdup at a West Side convenience store late last year were formally charged with murder on Friday.

Edgardo Colon, 34, and Tyrone Clay, 29, are both charged with first-degree murder of a peace officer for the Dec. 29 murder at the M&M Quick Foods at 1202 N. Austin.

On Friday, both were indicted on the charges and arraignment was set for Feb. 21, Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.

Police have said two masked men walked into the store in the Austin neighborhood near Oak Park and robbed it.

The bandits got away with hundreds of dollars. Lewis, who was working as a security guard at the store, fired a shot before one of the robbers opened fire on him with a TEC-9 semiautomatic weapon with a high-capacity clip, sources said.

Lewis’ weapon is missing, along with the TEC-9, sources said.

Colon and Clay were among four men police initially questioned in the case. The other two were released without charges.

Officials at the time said the investigation remains open and detectives are seeking anyone who may have known about the plan to rob the store.

Colon is a parolee who was in a car that police stopped for making an improper turn. Police found a .357-caliber handgun with two live rounds in the car.

Chicago Police Nab Bank Robbery Suspects

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 21:12

CHICAGO (CBS) — Five suspects were in custody Friday after a bank was robbed in the Portage Park neighborhood and police pursued a purported getaway vehicle.

Two men robbed the Chase Bank branch at 4854 West Irving Park Road around 1:30 p.m., the FBI said in a statement. A short distance away, Chicago police stopped a vehicle that matched the description of a getaway vehicle that had been relayed by a witness, authorities said.

LISTEN: WBBM Newsradio’s Nancy Harty reports

A total of five people, including three who were waiting in a car, were taken into custody.

The robbery was still under investigation.

The two men who actually entered the Chase Bank branch Friday are suspected of robbing the Chase Bank branch at 1230 North Milwaukee Ave. on two prior occasions.

No injuries were reported during Friday’s incident, the FBI said. One bystander, Tom Myers, described how he helped pin down one of the suspects before police swarmed the bank robber.

“I don’t know if he thought I was a cop or what have you, but he put his hands out and I stepped on both of his hands,” Myers told CBS 2.
